Powers:
Super Speed: This allows the rangers to move extremely fast and avoid attacks by their enemies. This also gives them the ability to leap to great heights quickly as seen by Rocky in Wizard for a Day. It has also been used by Rocky in Final Face-Off.
Merging: This was first used by Rocky to merge with a tree. He then attacked the Tenga Warriors from inside the tree when they inspected the tree to figure out where he went in A Ranger Catastrophe.
Also, like the other Ninja Rangers, he gained powers unique to his animal: In Rocky's case, enhanced strength and the ability to quickly climb up surfaces.
Personality: James is an easy-going person who is slow to anger. He tends to spend his off-duty time relaxing, either meditating or (location willing) surfing. He has claimed that he is more centered than ever when he is on his board. He tends to joke in combat, hoping to throw his opponents off guard.
His training and fighting style is somewhat esoteric, using maneuvers from a number of martial arts forms, and shifting from defensive to the offensive at will. He knows that if he is not careful his skills and physical strength could leave innocent people hurt, something he is unwilling to let happen again after the incident which ended his career in American football. James has come to terms with what happened and will not let it stop him from doing anything, he is just more careful now than he used to be. A natural team-player (from his football days, combined with the martial arts training), James is unfailingly loyal to his friends and allies.
History: James was born in Angel Grove to a Thai mother and an American father. He was a big child and, by the time he reached high school was almost immediately picked for the American football team. He was placed in defense and proceeded to become the star player on the team. All that ended when he broke the leg of an opponent in a pivotal game.
James quit the team, realizing that he couldn't be so cavalier with his considerable size. His mother suggested that he take up martial arts to, as she put it, “Centre himself”. James took to Kickboxing and Tai Chi with gusto, creating a fusion of various forms over the next few years as well as taking up surfing in what little spare time he had. He moved to Angel Grove to attend community college and continue his training.
James was away from Angel Grove during the attack that damaged large areas of the city. By the time he got home James was frantic after heading into the city on foot since transport was almost non-existent and helping out where he could with the rescue efforts. After discovering that his parents were unharmed James's mother presented him with a family heirloom, the Ninja Power Coin owned by a distant ancestor of his, Rocky DeSantos. They explained that it was his destiny to be a power ranger. James, after a moment's consideration, opted to take up the offer and try to work out how to contact the other rangers.
