Personality: Cassius is a stone—strong, solid, firm—no one who knows him would say anything less of him. Blood, guts, gore—none of it bothers him. He sees those things on a daily basis, and it doesn’t phase him one bit. His career is what gives him his sense of purpose, and he loves every second of it. He is good at what he does, and everyone knows it. He is humble, though, only claiming to be better than someone when he is certain he is.
In spite of the game face he wears at work, Cassius is not a cold man. Quite the opposite, in fact. His wife would describe him as a very warm, kind man. He has a habit of bringing his work home with him, especially after a difficult day, and this can make him irritable. He tries to be a good husband, and he is.
He doesn’t have many hobbies—his career takes up the vast majority of his time. He does enjoy listening to music and even playing the odd video game here and there, though he rarely has the time or energy to do so. He hates people who don’t do their jobs, and he hates having to repeat himself. Nothing gets on his nerves quite like being ignored.
History: Cassius Jaeger-Torres was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His mother—Edith Jaeger—was a cardiothoracic surgeon at a prestigious urban hospital, and Sebastian Torres, his father, was a film director. They were never worried about money, and Cassius knew nothing but privilege.
Growing up, Cassius heard the words ‘legacy’ and ‘name’ many, many times, and this went well into his adulthood. Mostly from his mother, who came from a long line of surgeons—all of whom were among the most respected of their time‚. There would be talk about securing legacies and upholding their name. Cassius came to understand the concept from a very early age, and the responsibilities that came with it.
As the only child his parents ever had, Cassius was their sole heir, and thus, the burden of their legacy would fall upon his shoulders. He had to be ready. He studied hard through grade school and high school, went to college, graduated with flying colors, and then went on to med school. He was always the best in his class. Valedictorian, prom king, you name it, he’s earned it. When he graduated med school, hospitals all across the country started to offer him a position working for them.
The one he chose, however, was the one at Lightspeed, run by the government. Something about working at a federal hospital drew him in. He would shadow other doctors, and, as he advanced, perform surgery when they needed it. When the time came to chose his specialty, he chose trauma surgery. It seemed like the only option that made sense. He heard of power rangers through his entire career, but it wasn't until recently that he started to meet them in person.
During his fifth year as a resident, he met Carina Joy, an intern who was many years younger than he was. They fell in love; it was as though they were made for each other. Flash forward three years, and they’re standing at the altar. A month later, Carina tells Cassius she’s pregnant.
Months go by, then, at a prenatal appointment with Carina’s obstetrician, they find out that their child has a condition called osteogenesis imperfecta. It is unlikely that he will survive longer than a few hours after birth.
So, a few months later, when the time comes, Carina gives birth to a baby girl. They name her Felicity and hold her fragile, broken body until her heart stops beating.
It has been a few years since they lost their daughter, and while they can never mend the hole that left in them, they’ve learned how to be okay with the loss. Cassius loves his job. He loves being a part of something greater, something purposeful.
